When servicemen and women head outside the wire, there’s a ton of gear they’re usually bringing with them.ĩ times out of 10, they’ll be heading out in a flak jacket with protective plates, 180 rounds of ammunition, water, Kevlar, rations, and a rifle. When someone says “full battle-rattle”, they’re talking about gear. These are the heavy hitters, with the classified intel that your average service member doesn’t need to know. ![]() Secret squirrel can refer to either intelligence personnel, secret communications, someone with a higher classification than you, or a classified op. ![]() Secret squirrel might sound funny, but this shit is no joke. It’s the kind of mistake that doesn’t just make someone look stupid, it could cost someone their life. Why? Because saluting an officer in the field makes it easy for an enemy sniper to identify who’s in charge. What you’re NOT supposed to do is salute an officer while you’re in the field. That’s pretty common knowledge these days. Here’s the deal: you’re supposed to salute officers. Sniper checks might sound exciting, but it’s actually just standard procedure. It can also be when you’re ordered to take care of some out of control facial hair. Policing is when a unit internally checks everyone’s behavior. Oh, police calls? That’s the height of service, folks.īasically, your SO lines up your entire unit and has you walk around an area, picking up trash.ĭon’t confuse that term with ‘policing’ though, because that’s different. It’s really only for people who spend their days “flying a desk”.ĭo you only do office work? You’re in the chair force. Technically, if you’re a proper pilot, you don’t qualify for this term. Basically, it’s describing someone who doesn’t have the official qualification in an infantry field, but they’ve worked regularly with the infantry.Īrtillerymen and drivers end up with this term a lot, since they’re people deployed for extended periods of time with the infantry.Īlright, now we’re getting into the good stuff!Ĭhair Force can be just about anyone in the Air Force, since other service members see them as professional ‘sitters’. If someone’s being called a grunt by association, there are a few things to keep in mind.įirst, this is something mostly Marines will understand, because it’s basically their term.īut more importantly, it’s actually a compliment. This one’s kinda weird, because if you’ve never heard it before, you might think it’s an insult. ![]() If you’re still confused, think of it this way: you don’t want to leave your car in a bad neighborhood, or you might come back to find it propped up on cinder blocks, field stripped. When a Humvee gets stuck or broken outside of base, the troops will field strip it, taking anything that’s classified or valuable before they ditch it. Literally, it’s when you take a weapon apart and give it the routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs it needs while you’re in the field.īut the truth is, ‘field strip’ gets used a lot to describe taking just about anything apart. While you shouldn’t be lying to superior officers, there’s a big difference between someone following orders and someone who throws you under the bus.Īlso known as ‘Buddy Fuckers’, these fake friends have no problem ruining you, especially if it saves their ass. If someone’s a Blue Falcon, that means they’re letting someone else take the heat for something.īlue Falcons are the snitches of the military world. So let’s go over some of the lingo and a list of military slang terms that only a service member will ever understand. ![]() I mean, if you told the average person that you were on the FOB when the IDP hit, they’d have no idea what the hell you were talking about! When you think of ‘slang’, you probably think about people in the South saying “y’all” or Bostonians saying “wicked”.īut guess what? There’s a whole world of slang most people don’t know about: military slang.Īs a service member, you need to be clear and quick like your life depends on it.

![]() Stainless has a lot to like but is a bit too much like Safari in its minimalist tabs. This even included the favicons that I "created" myself which were javascript scripts for things like Post to Delicious or Translate to English. Incidentally, making the transition from OmniWeb to Canary (and Chrome) was very much facilitated by the fact that I could drag the bookmark favicons from OmniWebs bookmark bar to that of Canary without any loss or confusion. Further, its minimalist approach, although much loved by Mac fanboys, just doesn't appeal to me. See this thread that's been running for 5 years begging for this in Safari. Safari 5.1 is fast and has the full-screen capability that is a major feature of Lion but it does not allow favicon only bookmarks. Seems we have to wait for OmniWeb 6 before 64-bit compatibility is available. ![]() I had used OmniWeb 5.11 for quite some time mainly for this reason, but it didn't seem to be compatible with Lion as it crashed quite a number of times on me. One thing that makes a browser fast is the availability of a favicon-only bookmarks bar which is colorful, yet minimalist and let's you very quickly browse to all of your favorite websites with just one-click. ![]() I don't want a browser so overloaded with features and extensions that it becomes lethargic. I want a browser essentially just for light browsing and the main features I need are speed, speed and did I mention speed? It's main feature, the millions of extensions, just do not excite me. In particular, I have not looked at Firefox as I really have never liked it. Of course, this can only be my personal subjective view, particularly as I have actually only tested a few browsers including OmniWeb, Stainless, Safari, Chrome and Chrome Canary. ![]() There are some design quirks with the machine that make it less appealing to pull out of the closet - the brand recommends emptying the tank after each use, and it’s unwieldy to maneuver into a tub or shower, for example - but for a deep clean, it does a great job.If the floors in your home are covered in carpet and there are lots of feet-or paws-to make a mess of it, a dedicated carpet cleaner may be a wise addition to your cleaning arsenal. (The machine comes with nearly a dozen accessories, including a squeegee and a jet nozzle for detail work.) I was amazed at how quickly the steam got my floors looking pristine they looked better in less time than I could get them with a standard microfiber mop and elbow grease, and they stayed cleaner for longer. I took the Pure Enrichment cleaner for a test run on two surfaces: bathroom-tile and kitchen vinyl flooring, using the triangular steam mop. Keep steaming and repeat the process several times (steam, let dry, steam again) until there are no more odors coming up.” “Open the window and turn on fans to make it more bearable. ![]() Don’t worry: These are not coming from your steamer but from the surface you’re steaming,” says Dulude. “When cleaning your carpets or couches for the first time you’ll likely smell awful odors coming up with the steam. Steam cleaners also have more applications than a carpet cleaner they can be used on surfaces other than textiles, to deep-clean bathroom tile, grout, ovens, and more.Ĭleaning method: Steam cleaner | Power: 12.5 amps | Capacity: 0.4 gallons | Weight: 9 lbsįor an affordable home steam cleaner, Dulude recommends this model by Pure Enrichment, which is both powerful and as lightweight as a spot carpet cleaner. It’s helpful if someone in your household has environmental allergies: “It removers odors and freshens up without chemicals but also kills dust mites and allergens,” Dulude says. Steam cleaning takes less time to dry, is chemical free, and doesn’t leave a scent. Kadi Dulude, owner of Wizard of Homes, says a carpet cleaner will produce “way more clear and visible” results on “a very dirty or smelly rug.” The rug will need time to dry after cleaning (she recommends opening windows or running fans), and “in most cases, the carpets look and feel brand new.” ![]() One way to think about it is the difference between throwing a piece of clothing in the washing machine and using a garment steamer - washing will do more to remove dirt, and steaming will lift some stains, kill germs and allergens, and remove odors. This list includes both carpet cleaners, which use a motor and suction to circulate a cleaning solution through textile fibers, and steam cleaners, which use only water. Overcleaning may dry out or weaken carpet fibers, which makes them more permeable to dirt and staining. “It’s like overcleaning your hair or skin,” says Sabrina Fierman, president of cleaning service New York’s Little Elves. It’s also important to avoid the temptation to overclean: hold off until there’s staining or embedded grit, and use a vacuum in the interim. Deep cleaning will keep a rug in good shape for longer, and there are other benefits, like removing allergens and odors. ![]() (More on the distinction below.)Īccording to Paul Iskyan, president of ABC Rug & Carpet Cleaning Service, you should be deep-cleaning your carpets and rugs every couple of years, especially if they’re in a high-traffic area. Although these appliances often get grouped together, they lift stains using different methods: carpet cleaners use water and a specialized cleaning liquid to effectively shampoo textiles, often assisted by heat steam cleaners use only water heated past boiling point and can be used on other materials in addition to textiles, such as tile or metal. That’s where carpet cleaners and steam cleaners come in. While a good vacuum cleaner can get rid of a lot of the dust and dirt that gets trapped in carpet fibers, there are messes - spilled food, pet accidents, muddy footprints, plus the embedded grit that collects over time - that require a deeper clean. “It’s a dangerous thing for Ohio and for the whole country.” Shari Moore, a retired banker from suburban Toledo who voted against the amendment along with her husband, said it was a decision rooted in their Christian beliefs. ![]() “If we’re able to defeat this, then I think we can come together as a state and find a place where a majority of Ohioans can, in fact, agree,” he said. The governor said it “goes too far for Ohio.” Mike DeWine and first lady Fran DeWine, who cast votes against Issue 1 in rural Xenia on Wednesday, urged Ohioans to oppose the measure. Wade decision, which had legalized abortion nationwide for half a century. Ohio’s proposed constitutional amendment would give every person “the right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions.” The effort comes on the heels of a string of victories for abortion rights supporters around the country who have been winning in both Democratic and heavily Republican states since the U.S. “I’m fairly conservative, but I’m also married and have daughters and granddaughters,” he said. A Republican, Griffiths said he voted yes on the constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights. Among them was Jonathan Griffiths from the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek. Several vote centers visited Wednesday had no lines but a steady trickle of voters. ![]() Republicans and anti-abortion groups had hoped to pass that measure ahead of the fall vote on abortion rights.ĪP VoteCast polling last year found that 59% of Ohio voters say abortion should generally be legal. TV and the internet have featured a few grey cats over the last few years. Russian Blues, Nebelungs, and the Thai Korat are three examples of cats that are purely grey. Wedge grey siamese cat A Note About Grey Cats I would suggest trying your name of choice and giving it a few months to stick and then making a decision from there. There is no evidence one way or the other as to what happens when a new owner changes the name of an older cat e.g., if you were to get a rescue kitty who was already several years old. You know that your cat does learn its name, but if you choose to change your cat’s name after a few weeks, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. So many good combinations and options! Names that aren’t terribly flattering to your feline will most likely tire quickly, such as Cow. Besides that, you don’t want to choose a name that’ll go out of fashion. It may seem hilarious to give your cat a lengthy name when you first get it, but you may well tire of calling this name out and sharing it with others. Generally, it’s a good idea to find grey cat names that complement the size of your feline friend. Don’t Choose a Name That Is Bigger Than Your CatĪslan might not be the best bet if your cat is a Munchkin unless you enjoy a bit of humor. Plus, it is likely that you will be introducing your cat to friends, family, vets, and others, so a shorter name is easier for everyone to understand and remember. The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear. The blue light from the Sun scatters away, and longer-wavelength red, orange, and yellow light passes through.ĭuring a lunar eclipse, the Moon turns red because the only sunlight reaching the Moon passes through Earth’s atmosphere. But when the Sun is setting, sunlight must pass through more atmosphere and travel farther before reaching our eyes. When the Sun is overhead, we see blue light throughout the sky. Red light, on the other hand, travels more directly through the atmosphere. Blue light has a shorter wavelength and is scattered more easily by particles in Earth’s atmosphere than red light, which has a longer wavelength. Light travels in waves, and different colors of light have different physical properties. The same phenomenon that makes our sky blue and our sunsets red causes the Moon to turn red during a lunar eclipse. What else can I see tonight?ĭuring the eclipse, the Moon moves through the western part of the constellation Taurus. Second, since this eclipse is almost-total, the Moon spends a longer amount of time in the Earth’s umbra than it would in a ‘more-partial’ eclipse. Right now, the Moon is near its farthest point in its orbit around the Earth and thus, moves slowly through Earth’s shadow. Closer to the Earth, the Moon moves faster, while further away, it travels more slowly. This change in distance impacts the Moon’s orbital speed. This is a long eclipse for two main reasons: 1) The Moon’s orbital speed and 2) The near-totality of the eclipse.įirst, the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, and the Earth is off-center within the orbit so sometimes the Moon is closer to the Earth and sometimes it is farther away. Using a camera on a tripod with exposures of several seconds will bring out the color, at the expense of overexposing the lit part of the Moon. The color might be easier to see in binoculars or a telescope. More than 95% of the Moon’s disk is in the umbra and the Moon will appear red. The part of the Moon inside the umbra will appear very dark. To the naked eye, as the Moon moves into the umbra, it looks like a bite is being taken out of the lunar disk.
